Families Matter!

This morning United Way and BostNet (a United Way affiliate) hosted a workshop for after-school practitioners on the subject of involving families their work. I was able to attend the plenary session, a panel discussion on how organizations involve families, measure the effectiveness of their efforts and make ongoing improvements. Several things impressed me.

First was the striking diversity of the panel and the audience. All the colors and cultures of Greater Boston were represented, and it was obvious that their knowledge informs all they do and, as a result, families are getting what they need to help their kids succeed. We hear a lot of talk about how segregated Boston is, by race, class & neighborhood. That may be, but you wouldn’t know it from this group! The kind of diversity that this collection of people brings to its task would be the envy of any corporation trying to compete in a global economy.

Second, I was astounded by the talent and commitment that after-school staff bring to their work. Their passion, for the kids they work with, their families and their community is palpable and electrifying. These are people who throw their lives into their work. They are on fire with the determination to give kids & families what they need. As Winique Green of United Way’s Out of Harm’s Way Initiative said, “Before you can build bridges to families, you have to be the bridge, so lay down & serve!”

Last, I was able to see clearly how United Way adds value to the work. These after-school workers are bright, talented and determined to make a significant difference. The tools and capacity building opportunities United Way makes available helps them to bring their work to a new level of rigor and impact. I’m proud to be associated with an organization that’s helping youth workers achieve their boldest ambitions.
